Chaweng Beach on Koh Samui

A typical scene on Chaweng Beach Koh Samui (Thailand). This digipaint was created by transforming a photo of this hawker selling food products. First I made the background pattern as the first layer. The hawker figure (second layer) was obtained by using different filters in Photoshop and a finishing touch by using Painter Classic.

The region of Teruel (Spain)

The landscape in the province of Teruel reminds to the vast territories of Arizona (USA). Unfortunately there is hardly a place to stop the car to enjoy this scene.

Casas Colgadas

Cuenca (east of Madrid) is famous for the 14th /15th Century "hanging houses" (casas colgadas). The Old part of the city is hemmed in on three sides by a deep gorge carved out by two rivers. Along the cliffs of the gorge a number of houses hang precariously on the edge. One of these houses is the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art. We visited this museum in June 2005. I made a photo of one of the old windows and used this photo to make a quick watercolour

Fivelingo

Subject for this digipaint (left) and gouache (top) is the typical landscape Fivelingo or Fivelgo in the northern part of the Netherlands. It is an old cultural landscape were people in earlier times use to live on mounds (locally: wierden or terpen) to protect themselves against high tides.
First I made the left painting on the computer using Painter Classic. This digipaint formed the starting point for the gouache.
I am concerned about the future of this valuable landscape threathened by the modern economic and demographic developments. This concern is expressed in a poem.

One of the fascinating concepts of the last decades is the concept of network society. One of the conclusions of Manuel Castells in his famous book on the Rise of the Network Society (1996, p. 469) is the importance of presence and absence in networks as sources of domination and change in our society.
These thoughts are more or less the background for this gouache and its associated poem. It shows a city in its complacency, deaf to the cries of those outside.

Year of the bull

Last summer we travelled to Salamanca. The city celebrated the construction of the famous Plaza Mayor 250 years ago. Amongst the many cultural events, the exposition of major sculptures in front of the New Cathedral was impressing. I made this gouache of the sculpture 'Year of the bull' made by Xavier Mascaró in 2001.

Mondrian and Amersfoort

Today we visited the Mondrian House in Amersfoort, The Netherlands. In this house Piet Mondrian (Mondriaan) was born in 1872 and nowadays it is a museum. We visited a special exposition and we were surprised by the reconstruction of the famous Parisian atelier of the painter. He worked in Paris from 1912-1936. It is known that this atelier impressed many of his visitors in those days.

Spaans landschap

De hitte tijdens onze reis in het centrale deel van Spanje in 2005 inspireerde tot het maken van een vrij heftig landschap. De inspiratiebron voor dit landschap is een schilderij van Jan van Hall (1898-1990). Dit abstracte schilderij vormde het uitgangspunt voor de compositie van mijn digipaint.
Eerst werd een schets gemaakt. Deze werd gescand en verder bewerkt met behulp van het programma Painter Classic.

In Thailand zijn spirit houses een bekend verschijnsel. Ze dienen als een nieuw huis voor de plaatselijke geesten, wanneer er op een bepaalde plaats een huis of zaak wordt gebouwd. De lokale geesten mogen niet worden verstoord. Om ze gunstig te stemmen wordt er als het ware voor hen een nieuw huis gebouwd.
De prent hierboven lijkt op een gouache, maar is wat ik noem een digipaint. Een schilderij gemaakt met behulp van het schilderprogramma Painter Classic. Ik maak eerst een schets met pen of potlood. Daarna wordt de schets ingescand. Schilderen gaat dan via een grafisch tablet. Voor deze prent is gebruik gemaakt van de tools 'pen en inkt' en 'krijt'. De tool water is heel geschikt om de vereiste menging van kleuren te verkrijgen.

Pijnbomen, net als overigens cypressen, worden langs de Middellandse zee steeds meer vervangen door palmbomen. Op de ansichtkaarten hebben lucht en zee alle kleurnuance verloren. Er is maar een kleur: standaard azurblauw. Je zou ook kunnen zeggen dat het Mediterrane landschap niet meer bestaat, maar verslagen is door de afbeeldingen op de posters en de toeristenfolders. Eigenlijk kun je grote delen van het Mediterrane landschap typeren als een machtslandschap waar de toeristenindustrie de dienst uitmaakt. Bovendien, eenmaal thuis gekomen wil de toerist de Mediterrane vakantieherinnering blijven koesteren: zo kwamen er subtropische zwemparadijzen en kregen vakantiedorpen het uiterlijk van een
marina aan de Provencaalse kust.

Vandaag een landschap geïnspireerd door een foto die mijn broer maakte. Hij maakte een opname van een zaagsnede van een boomstam en bewerkte die in Photoshop. Verticaal op de zaagsnede was een houtsplinter blijven staan. In de gouache vind je iets van die zaagsnede terug in het cirkelpatroon. Ik heb de splinter markant laten staan en ik heb de oorspronkelijke foto getransformeerd tot een landschap. Later maakte ik er het gedicht bij

Sant Pere Rodes

In de zomer van 2005 bezochten we het klooster Sant Pere de Rodes in Catalonië. Vlak bij dit klooster in het ruige berglandschap van de Creus ligt een kleine kapel. Ik maakte een foto en op basis daarvan een gouache. Later ontstond geïnspireerd door dit beeld het volgende gedicht:
