Fransum
The northern part of the Netherlands is an old cultural landscape. Typical to this region is the presence of mounds (local: terpen or wierden) used to protect people against the sea in the Middle Ages. Many of these mounds have little churches in Roman style. This painting is made by using gouache and a photo of the church. I combined the two and I coloured the photo of the church with water colour. Therefore the painting has got a strange combination of expressionist painting and realistic representation

Saint Tropez
In 2004 we visited Saint-Tropez, the still famous tourist attraction in southern France. The gouache shows at least three different 'worlds': The world of the locals represented by their houses in the background, the world of the rich and famous represented by the yachts in the harbour and the world of illusions represented by the paintings along the harbour quay.
